  1. Do I have to recycle?

Yes, it is mandatory in Sarasota County. It is paid for in the part of our property taxes called non ad-valorem.

  1. When do I put the recycle bins out?

Recyclable items go to the curb on the same day as your garbage and yard waste. They should be curbside by 6 AM on your collection day. To find out your day, call 941.861.5000 or go to

  1. Do I have to remove the labels from the jars and cans?

No you do not have to remove the labels. Just lightly rinse all containers.

  1. How do I get recycling bins if there aren’t any at my house or if they are in bad shape?

Call Waste Management at 941.493.4100

  1. What goes in the red container?

Paper products – including newspapers and their inserts, envelopes including those with windows, magazines, catalogs, phonebooks, paperback books, brown paper bags, shredded paper placed in paper or plastic bags, boxes like tissue boxes, soda boxes, cereal boxes with liner removed, writing and office paper, junk mail, and cardboard which needs to be cut down to 2 x 3 feet. Pizza boxes are now accepted if they do not have the liner or food in them and they are flattened.

  1. What goes in the blue container?

Aluminum cans, foil trays, steel and tin cans and their lids, empty aerosol cans, all colors of glass bottles and jars, metal jar lids, drink boxes, milk and juice cartons and plastics that have the recycle symbol and are numbered #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, and #7. Also #6 Styrofoam.

  1. What items should not go in the recycle bins?

Food-contaminated paper or cardboard products. Hardback books. Plastic bags, Styrofoam products, coat hangers, pots, pans, dishes, pane glass or glassware.

  1. So what do I do with all the plastic bags I get at the grocery store?

Most grocery stores have recycle bins outside near the entry for plastic bags so just save them up and bring them back. Alternatively remember to use some of the cloth bags that we seem to have everywhere but where we need them

  1. What about holidays – when will they pick-up my waste?

There is no collection service on New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The service is delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. A regular Friday collection delayed by a holiday occurs on Saturday.

  1. Where can I get more information?

For a mobile app there is an app called My Waste.

The county website is very helpful and at that location you can download the booklet called the Residential How To Guide which gives information on disposing of garbage, recycling, yard waste, electronics, chemicals and appliances. There is also a one sheet page which reminds you what to put in the bins called Residential Recycle List.
